How to Access Vortex via Tor Browser
Complete beginner guide: download Tor Browser, configure security settings, enter the Vortex onion address and navigate the captcha system.
Step 1 — Get Tor Browser
The official Tor Browser is maintained by the Tor Project. Download only from torproject.org. Avoid third-party mirrors and search engine results advertising "Tor Browser" downloads.
-
Visit the official Tor Project site
Go to torproject.org and click "Download Tor Browser". Choose the build for your OS.
-
Verify the checksum (recommended)
The downloads page provides SHA256 checksums. Verify before running. On Windows:
certutil -hashfile TorBrowser.exe SHA256 -
Install and launch
Run the installer or extract the archive. Launch Tor Browser and wait for it to connect to the Tor network before navigating anywhere.
Step 2 — Set Security Level
Before visiting any onion service, raise the security level to Safest. This disables JavaScript by default, which removes a significant attack surface for malicious exit nodes and compromised hidden services.
-
Click the shield icon
It appears in the browser toolbar, to the left of the address bar.
-
Open Advanced Security Settings
Click the link at the bottom of the dropdown.
-
Move slider to Safest
Drag to the topmost position. The shield icon will fill solid. This persists across sessions.
Step 3 — Enter the Onion Address
Paste the verified address directly into the address bar. Onion addresses cannot be found via clearnet search engines. Any result from a search engine is either a phishing clone or a proxy — do not use them.
Step 4 — Queue and Captcha
Vortex uses a queue and captcha system to prevent automated access and manage peak-hour load. This is expected behaviour, not a technical fault.
-
Wait in queue
During busy periods a queue page shows an estimated wait. Do not refresh — this resets your position. The page advances automatically.
-
Solve the text captcha
Vortex uses a text-based captcha that does not require JavaScript. Enter the distorted characters shown. A refresh link gives a new challenge without resetting queue position.
-
Complete PGP login
After the captcha, enter your credentials. Decrypt the PGP challenge shown on screen using your local private key and submit the plaintext to finish authentication.
Common Issues
Check Tor is connected (green onion icon). Try New Circuit for this Site. If it persists, the market may be briefly down — wait 30 minutes and retry.
If the form is unresponsive, temporarily set security to Standard, solve the captcha, then return to Safest immediately afterward.
Confirm you are using the exact private key registered to your account. Copy the full PGP block including headers. Line-break differences between editors cause failures.
At Safest level, fonts and some CSS effects are blocked. Navigation still works. This is expected and not a problem with the market.
